Fuel prices in Armenia in October 2026 run at roughly 600 to 630 AMD a litre for petrol, 680 to 710 AMD for diesel and 240 to 250 AMD for LPG. That is about $1.65 to $1.73 for petrol, and diesel costs more than petrol, the reverse of most of Europe. A 237 km drive from Yerevan to Goris burns about 11,000 to 12,000 AMD of petrol in a typical car.

Current prices by fuel

Armenia is landlocked and imports its fuel, so prices follow world markets and move fast. In mid-September petrol hit a record 600 AMD a litre (about $1.65), and a price tracker listed it near 629 AMD on 30 October. Treat any figure as an average: stations differ, and price trackers often convert from dollars, so the number at the pump can differ by 20 to 30 AMD.

FuelAMD per litreApprox. USDApprox. EUR
Petrol (AI-92 and AI-95)600 to 6301.65 to 1.731.41 to 1.48
Diesel680 to 7101.87 to 1.951.60 to 1.67
LPG (autogas)240 to 2500.66 to 0.690.56 to 0.59

The Armenian Statistical Committee gave lower official averages for August 2026: regular petrol 550, premium 580 and LPG 230 to 240 AMD. Against August 2025 that is petrol up 11%, diesel up 25% and LPG up 23.6%. Conversions use about 364 AMD per dollar and 425 AMD per euro.

Diesel costs more than petrol

In Germany or Italy diesel is usually the cheaper pump. In Armenia it is the dearest: roughly 80 AMD a litre more than petrol. If you are choosing between a diesel SUV and a petrol one, the diesel’s better consumption does not always cover the gap on a short trip. Check the fuel type on your booking before you leave the counter, because putting the wrong fuel in is the one mistake that cannot be fixed at the roadside.

LPG: the cheap fuel that surprises tourists

LPG costs about 40% of petrol per litre (250 against 600 AMD in September). Conversions are widespread in the private and taxi fleet, so you will see “gas” signs at many stations. Two catches: the tank sits in the boot, so converted cars lose luggage space, and some underground car parks and tunnels restrict LPG vehicles. We do not know the exact share of the fleet running on gas, so do not assume your rental does.

What a trip costs in fuel

At 8 litres per 100 km, 100 km costs about 4,800 AMD ($13, €11) at 600 AMD a litre. Typical legs: Yerevan to Garni and back burns well under 10 litres, Yerevan to Sevanavank (68 km) about 5.5 litres each way, Yerevan to Goris (237 km) about 19 litres, roughly 11,400 AMD ($31, €27). Mountain roads and air-conditioning push consumption up.

Octane, stations and where to fill up

AI-92 and AI-95 are sold almost everywhere, and AI-98 at larger branded stations in Yerevan and on main routes. AI-95 is the safe default. Stations are plentiful on the M1, M2 and M4 and around towns. On the southern M2 beyond Goris, the Meghri road, the Aragats highlands and remote Vayots Dzor, do not drive below half a tank. Treat the Selim Pass, the Vorotan stretch, the Kari Lake road and the Tatev gorge road as having no fuel. Fill up in Vanadzor before the Debed canyon, because Alaverdi has few stations.

Paying for fuel

Branded stations in Yerevan and on main highways take cards. Small rural stations are often cash only, in AMD, so carry at least 20,000 AMD before a regional trip. ATMs are scarce in rural Lori, Tavush and Syunik. If your card is Russian-issued, ask us before you travel, because Visa and Mastercard from Russia do not work in Armenia. Read the rental terms for the fuel level the car must be returned with.

Questions about fuel in Armenia

How much is petrol in Armenia?

About 600 to 630 AMD a litre in October 2026, roughly $1.65 to $1.73. Official statistical averages for August were lower, at 550 to 580 AMD, and prices have risen since.

Is diesel cheaper than petrol in Armenia?

No. Diesel is about 680 to 710 AMD a litre, more than petrol, so a diesel car is not automatically the cheaper one to run.

Can I use a card at petrol stations?

Yes at branded stations in Yerevan and on main highways. Small village stations are often cash only, so keep at least 20,000 AMD with you.

What petrol should I use?

AI-95 is the safe default. AI-92 is common too, and AI-98 is sold at some larger stations in Yerevan.

Where should I fill up before the mountains?

Fill up in Yerevan, Vanadzor or Goris. There are no stations on the Selim Pass, the Kari Lake road or the Tatev gorge road.
