Travel to Armenia from Greece: The 03:30 Aegean Night Flight

To travel to Armenia from Greece this winter you will almost certainly fly Aegean’s nonstop from Athens: four flights a week, about two and a half hours, as of October 2026. The catch is the clock. The flight leaves Athens just before midnight and lands at Zvartnots between roughly 03:30 and 04:30, so the real planning question is not the flight but what you do with your first morning and your car.

The decisive facts for Greek travellers

  • FlightAegean, Athens to Yerevan, 4 a week in the winter pattern
  • LandingAbout 03:30 to 04:30 Yerevan time, the morning after departure
  • Return flightLeaves Yerevan about 04:25 (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat)
  • EntryPassport, not the ID card; visa-free up to 180 days in one year
  • Greek foreign ministryNo Armenia advisory found
  • ClocksYerevan is 1 hour ahead until 25 October, then 2 hours

How to travel to Armenia from Greece in winter: the Aegean night flight

Athens is the only Greek airport with a nonstop to Yerevan that we could confirm for winter 2026-27. Greek press and the foreign ministry write the city Ερεβάν or Γερεβάν; airline sites say Yerevan.

RouteAirlineFrequency (October 2026)Block timeUsual landing time

We found no Greek route to Gyumri. The clocks change on 25 October and we did not see Aegean’s winter times, so check the airline’s timetable before you book: winter schedules change. Peak summer 2026 was daily, which is why the winter pattern feels thin.

Work backwards from the return. Leave Athens on Sunday night, land Monday at about 03:30, and the Friday 04:25 flight gives you four full days, Monday to Thursday. Because the return leaves in the small hours, your last day is really the evening before.

The 03:30 problem, and how to solve it

A 03:30 landing puts you in the arrivals hall at about 04:15 on a good day, tired, in the dark, with 12 km of unfamiliar road to the city. Our advice is simple: do not make your first drive then.

Airport pickup is the promise on every booking. Add your flight number and we track it, the handover moves with a delay, and there is no waiting fee. With evncar, pickup at Zvartnots is free; the rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time.

The calmer plan. Take a chauffeur airport transfer to your hotel, which has no night surcharge and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. Sleep. Collect the car at about 09:00 from Yerevan city centre or your hotel. A 09:00 handover falls outside the fee window and you drive in daylight. The UK’s FCDO advises avoiding driving outside cities and towns in the dark, and driving at night in Armenia explains why.

The same question applies at the other end. With a 04:25 departure, the car goes back around 01:30 to 02:00, so ask whether the out-of-hours fee covers a return then. The rental terms list every charge. Details of the airport side are on the pickup page and in the Zvartnots guide.

Passport and entry for Greek citizens

Greece is on Armenia’s visa-free list: up to 180 days per year, on all passport types, according to the foreign ministry’s published list. The Greek ministry’s page for Greeks abroad does not mention Armenia, so there is no Greek statement to quote.

Bring your passport, not your tautotita. Armenia asks for a valid passport, and we found no official confirmation that a national ID card is accepted, so do not count on one. The passport should cover your whole stay. Many guides say six months, which is advice and not an Armenian rule.

Your Greek licence

Greece and Armenia are both parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention, so the national licence rule applies. Our rule: a national licence in Latin script is accepted for stays up to one year, otherwise you need an IDP alongside it. Check that your card prints your name and categories in Latin letters; we have not verified every Greek card.

One Greek wrinkle. Temporary paper licences and the gov.gr digital licence are reportedly valid only inside Greece, so do not show either at a counter in Yerevan. Bring the plastic card. If you want zero doubt, an IDP from ELPA costs little, though ELPA reportedly will not issue one against a temporary licence. Sixt Armenia’s terms list only Iceland, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain as EU exceptions needing an IDP; Greece is not on that list. See our IDP guide and documents needed to rent a car in Armenia.

What Athens says about Armenia: nothing, so use benchmarks

We found no Armenia advisory from the Greek foreign ministry. It works through one-off announcements, such as the one on 11 October 2026 advising against travel to Saudi Arabia, and we saw none for Armenia. The Greek embassy in Yerevan lists consular contacts and an emergency line, +374 44430045, but no safety text. We could not see every page on mfa.gr, so check it yourself.

For comparison, Germany’s foreign office (Auswärtiges Amt, 15 October 2026) warns against travel to named zones along the Azerbaijani border: the M11 east of Vardenis, M14, H30, H37, H38, the M16 north of Ijevan, the M2 between Yeraskh and Karki, the area north of Jermuk, everything east of Goris and the M17 south of Kapan. It also says accident risk is far higher than in Germany and alcohol is banned outright.

On the road, the standard loops do not touch those strips: Sevan and Dilijan, Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, the Debed canyon, Gyumri and Aragats. The M2 at Yeraskh is transit-only, so drive through and do not stop. Syunik south and east of Goris, and the roads north of Jermuk, need care. Borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed. Traffic, not conflict, is the main risk, so check the Rescue Service bulletin for road closures.

The German text cites about €3,000 of compulsory property cover. That figure is old. Since 1 April 2026 the limit is 2,500,000 AMD, roughly €5,700, which is still not much if you hit a newer car. See car rental insurance in Armenia.

A roots trip: Alaverdi and the Debed canyon

About 30,000 people of Armenian descent live in Greece, according to the Greek foreign ministry. In the other direction, the ministry puts the Greek minority in Armenia at about 900 people, and other sources place it mostly in Lori around Alaverdi. If that is your family story, the route is Yerevan to Gyumri (121 km, 1 h 45 to 2 h), then Gyumri to Alaverdi (115 km, 2 h to 2 h 15). Fill the tank in Vanadzor first, because stations in the canyon are limited. See the Debed canyon guide.

Your first 48 hours after a 03:30 landing

03:30 to 09:00. Land, take the transfer to your hotel, and sleep. Do not collect the car yet.

09:00, handover. We hand over in about ten minutes, in the city centre or at your hotel. Bring passport, licence, booking confirmation and a card or cash for the deposit, which is shown on each car page and released within five working days of a clean return. See deposits and excess. Your Greek SIM will not roam for free, so buy a local SIM or eSIM.

Day one, afternoon. Keep it short: Garni is 31 km from Yerevan, 40 to 50 minutes, with Geghard 10 km beyond. Garni costs 1,500 AMD (about €3.50) and Geghard is free. See Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones.

Day two. Go to Lake Sevan and Dilijan, 68 km then 39 km (the day trip), or head south to Khor Virap in the morning light. For more days, use the self-drive itineraries.

Winter tyres

From 15 November to 31 March, winter tyres are compulsory on passenger cars in Armenia, with tread above 4 mm. Ask when you book that your car has them, and read winter driving in Armenia for passes that close.

Questions people actually ask

Is there a direct flight from Greece to Armenia?

Yes, from Athens. As of October 2026, Aegean flies it four times a week. We found no confirmed nonstop from Thessaloniki or the islands for winter 2026-27. Check the airline’s timetable before you book: winter schedules change.

What time does the Athens flight land in Yerevan?

Between roughly 03:30 and 04:30 local time, the morning after it leaves Athens at about 23:50. Winter times were not visible to us, so confirm with Aegean.

Do Greeks need a visa for Armenia?

Not for tourism. Greek citizens may stay up to 180 days in a year. Bring a valid passport, not just the ID card.

Do I need an International Driving Permit with a Greek licence?

Not if your plastic card prints your details in Latin letters, since Greece is a Vienna 1968 party. An ELPA permit is cheap insurance. Do not use a temporary paper or digital licence.

Can I collect the car at 04:00?

Pickup at Zvartnots is free; the rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number to check whether it applies to your arrival time. Many Greek travellers will prefer a transfer, sleep and a 09:00 handover.

Does the Greek foreign ministry warn against travel to Armenia?

We found no Armenia advisory on the mfa.gr pages we could read. Germany’s foreign office has a partial warning for the Azerbaijan border strips, described above.
