Travel to Armenia from Cyprus: Flights, IDP, Driving Side
14 October 2026

You can travel to Armenia from Cyprus on a nonstop flight of about two hours: as of October 2026 FlyOne Armenia flies Larnaca to Yerevan roughly every day, and Wizz Air adds several more departures a week. Cypriot passport holders enter visa-free for up to 180 days in a year. The part to sort out before you fly is the driving licence, because Cyprus is not a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention and Sixt Armenia asks Cypriot licence holders for an International Driving Permit.

Why Armenia works so well from Larnaca
The flight is short and direct. FlyOne’s October timetable has 3F872 leaving Larnaca at about 11:00 and landing in Yerevan around 13:50 local time. You lose no day and you land in daylight.
Two airlines share the route, so you pick your dates instead of building the trip around one weekday. Four or five days is realistic, and so is ten.
Armenian Cyprus is part of the story. The 1960 constitution recognises the Armenians as a religious group, and commonly quoted estimates put the community at 3,500 to 4,000 people, with schools in Larnaca, Limassol and Nicosia. With family on the Armenian side you will want your own car: Yerevan to Gyumri alone is 121 km, 1 h 45 to 2 h.
How to travel to Armenia from Cyprus: the Larnaca flights
Larnaca is the only Cypriot airport with year-round Yerevan service in the schedules we checked. From Paphos, Limassol or Nicosia, plan the drive to Larnaca into your departure day.
| Route | Airline | Frequency (October 2026) | Block time | Usual landing time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Larnaca to Yerevan (EVN) | FlyOne Armenia | Every day (3F872 Monday to Saturday, 3F3872 Sunday) | About 2 h | About 13:50; Sunday leaves two hours earlier |
| Larnaca to Yerevan (EVN) | Wizz Air | Several a week; timetable pages suggest six to eight | About 2 h 15 | Varies by day, late morning to after midnight |
| Larnaca to Gyumri (LWN) | Wizz Air | Twice a week, Thursday and Sunday | Not checked | Early departure, around 06:20 from Larnaca |
Wizz Air departures in the week of 19 October left Larnaca between 07:20 and 21:25. Add the flight time and the clock difference to find your landing time. An evening departure lands after 21:00, and the night-arrival note below applies. We found no published winter times after the clocks change on 25 October, so check the airline’s timetable before you book: winter schedules change.
Gyumri is 121 km from Yerevan. Our handover points are Zvartnots, Yerevan city centre and a hotel in Yerevan, so if you plan to fly into Gyumri, write to us before booking.
Passport and entry
Cyprus is on Armenia’s visa-exempt list. The foreign ministry’s visa-free list allows up to 180 days per year on all types of passport.
Bring your passport. The ministry asks for a valid passport, and we found no official confirmation that a national ID card is accepted, so do not count on one. Six months of passport validity is common airline advice, not an Armenian rule. If you live in Cyprus on another passport, check the rule for that nationality; Armenia opened an embassy in Nicosia in 2025, according to press reports.
Your Cypriot licence and the IDP question
Armenia lets drivers from 1968 Vienna Convention countries use their national licence. Cyprus is not one of them: public convention listings show it under the older 1949 Geneva Convention only. A Cypriot licence is therefore not a Vienna-compliant document in Armenia’s eyes.
The market agrees. Sixt Armenia’s published terms accept most EU licences but list Cyprus, with Iceland, Ireland, Malta and Spain, as valid only with an International Driving Permit. That is Sixt’s rule, not ours, but it shows what a Yerevan counter may ask.
Our rule is that a national licence in Latin script is accepted for stays up to one year, and otherwise you need an IDP alongside it. Whether Armenia recognises the 1949-format permit that a Cypriot issuer would normally provide, we could not verify. Do not guess: send us a photo of your licence and say which IDP you hold before you fly. Background: our IDP guide and documents needed to rent a car in Armenia.
If the permit is the wrong kind, you cannot fix it at the Zvartnots counter.
Driving on the right after a lifetime on the left
At home you sit on the right and keep left. In Armenia the cars are left-hand drive and traffic keeps right. Most people adjust within an hour, and the hour is worth planning.
- Roundabouts. You circle counter-clockwise now. Approach every Yerevan roundabout expecting the other driver to claim priority.
- Joining a road. The traffic that matters first comes from your left, while your eyes want to check right. Say it aloud for the first day.
- The gearstick. On a manual it moves to your right hand. If unsure, ask for an automatic. We cannot promise one for your dates, so read automatic or manual in Armenia and ask when you book.
Cameras are dense around Yerevan, the airport road and Lake Sevan, and limits are 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside (speed limits, cameras and fines). More in driving in Armenia.
What Cyprus says about Armenia, and what it means on the road
We found no Armenia-specific travel advice from the Cypriot foreign ministry. It issues advice as announcements, and the 2026 ones we could verify concern the Middle East. On 28 February it advised against all travel to eight more countries, among them Israel, Lebanon and the Gulf states, on top of existing advice on Iran, and by 27 March it counted more than 30 active warnings, as Cyprus Mail reported. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia were not named. We could not open the ministry’s full country index, so check mfa.gov.cy before booking, particularly as Armenia borders Iran.
For comparison, Germany’s foreign office has a partial warning (Teilreisewarnung), dated 15 October 2026, for named zones along the Azerbaijani border: roads east of Vardenis, the M16 north of Ijevan, the M2 between Yeraskh and Karki, the area north of Jermuk and everything east of Goris. Read it at the Auswärtiges Amt.
On the road, that means this. The standard loops do not touch those strips: Sevan and Dilijan, Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, the Debed canyon, Gyumri and Aragats. The M2 at Yeraskh is transit-only, so drive through and do not stop. Syunik south and east of Goris, and the roads north of Jermuk, need care and a plan. Borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed, and Iran is outside any rental, with no exceptions. Traffic, not conflict, is the main day-to-day risk. Check the Rescue Service bulletin for closures, and read driving at night before any evening drive.
Collecting the car at Zvartnots
With evncar, pickup at the Zvartnots arrivals hall is free on every booking. Add your flight number: we track the flight, the handover moves with a delay, and there is no waiting fee. Handover takes about ten minutes. Yerevan city centre and a hotel in Yerevan are also handover points. See the airport pickup page and the Zvartnots guide.
Bring your passport, licence and IDP, booking confirmation, and a card or cash for the deposit. The deposit is shown on each car page, taken at handover by credit card or cash, and released within five working days of return if the car comes back as it left with no unpaid fines. Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard work everywhere in Armenia. Carry at least 20,000 AMD (about €47) in cash for regional trips, as small rural stations are often cash-only. See deposits and excess and car rental insurance.
Pickup at Zvartnots is free; the rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time. After a midnight landing, a chauffeur airport transfer has no night surcharge and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and you can collect the car in the morning.
Your first 48 hours after a 13:50 landing
Day one, afternoon. Land about 13:50 and take the ten-minute handover. Zvartnots is about 12 km from the centre, so you reach your hotel early. Leave the car and walk: Yerevan parking is zoned and SMS payment needs an Armenian SIM (parking in Yerevan). Your Cypriot SIM will not roam for free, so buy a local SIM or eSIM; Viva-MTS has the widest coverage and needs a passport.
Day two, Garni and Geghard. Garni is 31 km out, 40 to 50 minutes, and Geghard is 10 km beyond. Garni’s temple costs 1,500 AMD (about €3.50), Geghard is free, and a sedan handles the Symphony of Stones detour. Details in Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones.
Day three, the south. Go early to Khor Virap (43 km, 45 to 55 minutes), then Areni and Noravank, driving through Yeraskh without stopping (the day trip). Longer plans are in the self-drive itineraries.
If your trip runs past 15 November, winter tyres are compulsory until 31 March; see winter driving in Armenia. Unsure what to rent? The complete renting guide helps.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a direct flight from Cyprus to Armenia?
Yes. As of October 2026, FlyOne Armenia flies Larnaca to Yerevan roughly every day and Wizz Air several times a week. Wizz also flies Larnaca to Gyumri on Thursdays and Sundays. Check the airline’s timetable before you book: winter schedules change.
Do Cypriots need a visa for Armenia?
Not for tourism. Armenia’s foreign ministry lists Cyprus as visa-exempt for up to 180 days in a year. Bring a valid passport and do not rely on a national ID card.
Do I need an International Driving Permit with a Cypriot licence?
Plan on it. Cyprus is not a Vienna 1968 party and Sixt Armenia requires an IDP from Cypriot licence holders. Whether Armenia accepts the 1949-format permit is unverified, so ask us which format works before you fly.
I drive on the left at home. Is Armenia hard?
Most people adjust within the first hour. Keep right, check left when joining roads, expect other drivers to claim roundabouts, and consider an automatic if you are unsure.
Is the airport pickup really free?
Yes, at the Zvartnots arrivals hall on every booking. For handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00 the rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number to check whether it applies to your arrival time.
Does Cyprus advise against travel to Armenia?
We found no Armenia-specific advice from the Cypriot foreign ministry, though we could not see its full index. Check mfa.gov.cy before booking and stay off the warned border strips described above.
