Travel to Armenia from Germany: Flights, Warnings, Rental Car
15 October 2026

To travel to Armenia from Germany, fly nonstop from Frankfurt, Hamburg, Memmingen, Dortmund or Cologne/Bonn, bring a passport (the Personalausweis is not enough) and drive on your ordinary German licence. Most of those flights land late in the evening or in the small hours, and the Auswärtiges Amt publishes a road-by-road partial warning for Armenia, so plan the first two days before you book.

Why a German fly-and-drive works in Armenia
Three concrete reasons. Flights: Wizz Air opened a Yerevan base on 1 October 2025, and five German airports now have a nonstop. Stay limit: up to 180 days a year without a visa, not Schengen’s 90 in 180. Scale: Garni is 31 km from Yerevan, Khor Virap 43 km, Lake Sevan 68 km, and an ordinary sedan covers most of the map (our 4×4 guide names the exceptions).
German threads help too. Halle (Saale) has been twinned with Gyumri since 2023, and Gyumri is 121 km from Yerevan. Leipzig’s council approved a partnership with Yerevan on 27 May 2026.
How to travel to Armenia from Germany: the nonstop flights
As of October 2026, these routes are flying. Check the airline’s timetable before you book: winter schedules change, and the new one starts on Sunday 25 October. Landing times are Yerevan local time (UTC+4 all year), so 03:15 means the early hours of the next day.
| From | Airline | How often | Flight time | Usually lands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt | Lufthansa | Daily | About 4 h 15 | About 03:15 |
| Frankfurt | Condor | Daily in summer 2026; winter not confirmed | About 4 h | About 02:00 |
| Hamburg | Wizz Air | Twice a week (Mon, Fri) | About 4 h 10 | About 16:10 |
| Memmingen | Wizz Air | Two to three a week; up to four from 17 Dec 2026 | 3 h 30 to 4 h | About 15:30 |
| Dortmund | Wizz Air | About four a week | About 4 h 20 | 00:05 to 00:40 (Fri, Sun, Mon); about 16:10 (Wed) |
| Cologne/Bonn | Eurowings | Tuesdays, seasonal | About 4 h 10 | About 21:40 |
Munich, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Leipzig have no nonstop that we could find. From the Munich region, Memmingen is the workaround; otherwise expect one stop, usually via Frankfurt, Warsaw, Istanbul or Athens, and 6.5 to 8 hours door to door. Eurowings flew Berlin to Yerevan twice a week in summer 2026, but we saw no sign of it after late September, so treat it as unavailable until your booking engine shows it.
Entry: a passport, not a Personalausweis
Germans enter visa-free. The Armenian foreign ministry allows no more than 180 days during one year. The Auswärtiges Amt (AA) is blunt about documents: enter on a valid passport, because an ID card is not sufficient, and a damaged passport can get you refused and sent back on the next flight. It wants the passport valid beyond your trip. Six months is the usual airline advice, not an Armenian rule. What to show at the rental counter: documents needed to rent a car in Armenia.
Your Führerschein in Armenia
The AA says the German licence is recognised. Armenia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, and the government’s test asks for Latin letters, categories A to E in Latin letters, and a photo. The German card passes. The AA recommends an international permit but says it is valid only with the national licence. For evncar, a Latin-script national licence is accepted for stays up to one year (beyond that, an IDP is needed alongside it), you must have held it two years, and the minimum age is 21 to 25 depending on the car (each car page shows it). Under 25 a daily young-driver surcharge applies; email info@evncar.com for the details.
Two wrinkles. If you still hold the old grey or pink paper licence, we found no official word on whether it passes: swap it for the card or ask us before you fly. If your permit is in the 1949 format, we could not verify that Armenia recognises it. The IDP guide has the rest. For a longer stay or to buy a car, the AA says you need an Armenian licence.
What the Auswärtiges Amt says, road by road
Armenia is not under a full Reisewarnung. The AA page (Stand 15.10.2026, unchanged in substance since 12 June 2026) carries a Teilreisewarnung, a partial warning for named areas and roads. Here is the list, line by line.
| Area | The AA warns against | On your route |
|---|---|---|
| Gegharkunik | M11 east of Vardenis; M14, H30, H37, H38 | Sevanavank, Hayravank and Noratus are on the western side of the lake. Do not drive east of Vardenis, and check any other road on the list before using it. |
| Tavush | M16 north of Ijevan and all areas east of that line | Dilijan, Haghartsin and Goshavank are well short of it. |
| Ararat | M2 between Yeraskh and Karki | The road to Areni, Noravank, Jermuk, Goris and Tatev, beside the Nakhchivan frontier. US advice says driving through Yeraskh is allowed and stopping is not. Do not stop, do not photograph. |
| Vayots Dzor | Areas north of Jermuk to the Azerbaijani border | Jermuk is a spa town 171 km from Yerevan. Do not go north of it. |
| Syunik | Everything east of Goris; E117/M2 between Vorota and Karmrakar; M17 south of Kapan to Shanidzor | Tatev lies south-west of Goris. The old Goris–Kapan road through Karmrakar is closed to general traffic: take the Ltsen bypass and follow signs, not your phone. Khndzoresk lies east of Goris, so a literal reading puts it inside the warning. |
The AA adds that the Azerbaijani border crossings are closed, that military restricted zones carry a mine risk, and that isolated armed incidents cannot be ruled out; it advises against roads near that border. It says nothing about rental cars.
The standard loops from Yerevan touch none of the warned roads: Garni and Geghard, Sevan and Dilijan, Gyumri and the M1, the Debed canyon via Vanadzor and Alaverdi, Amberd and Aragats. The southern loop crosses one named stretch, the M2 at Yeraskh. Follow the warning to the letter and you skip that loop and most of Syunik. A warning is advice, not a ban, and your travel insurer may read it differently from you, so ask before you book. We cannot tell you the south is safe. We can tell you where the line is.
For most visitors the daily risk is traffic, not conflict. The AA says traffic rules are partly ignored, accident risk is considerably higher than in Germany, you should avoid driving in the dark away from main roads, and alcohol at the wheel is absolutely forbidden. It also pushes comprehensive cover. It cites about €3,000 of compulsory property cover; since 1 April 2026 the limit is 2,500,000 AMD per injured party, under €6,000, and it pays for the other person’s car, not yours. At evncar, collision damage waiver is in every rate and the deposit is the most you can be liable for. See car rental insurance in Armenia and driving in Armenia.
Collecting the car after a late flight
Pickup at the Zvartnots arrivals hall is free on every booking. Add your flight number: we track the flight, the handover moves with a delay, and there is no waiting fee. The handover takes about ten minutes, and the booking form also offers Yerevan city centre or a hotel as the handover point. Nothing is charged online, and cancellation is free until handover. The Zvartnots guide walks through the arrivals hall.
Pickup at Zvartnots is free. The rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time. If you would rather sleep, a chauffeur transfer has no night surcharge and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing; take the car at the hotel in the morning.
German renters expect a Kaution on a credit card. Here the deposit, shown on each car page, is taken at handover by card or in cash and released within five working days of return, if the car comes back as it left and with no unpaid fines. See deposits and excess, or renting without a credit card. A second driver is free, mileage is unlimited, and the car goes out full and returns full. Lufthansa’s return leaves Yerevan at 04:30, so ask how the out-of-hours fee works for returns, or hand the car back the evening before.
Your first 48 hours, by arrival time
Lufthansa at 03:15, Condor in summer at 02:00, Dortmund after midnight. Go to the hotel and sleep. Take the car at 10:00 or 11:00, stay local that day, and do Garni (40 to 50 minutes) and Geghard (15 more) the next morning, with the paved detour to the Symphony of Stones: the half-day is here. Day three is Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank. Start early, because Ararat hazes out by midday in summer.
Wizz from Hamburg or Memmingen, about 15:30 to 16:10. The easy slot: out of the airport by about 17:00, dinner in the city. Day two is Garni and Geghard, day three is Sevan and Dilijan (day-trip guide). Cologne on a Tuesday, about 21:40, lands just past the 21:00 line, so ask about the fee.
Day-one chores. Buy a SIM with your passport: Armenia is outside EU roaming, and Viva-MTS has the widest coverage (2,500 AMD for 4 GB, 30 days). Paid parking in Yerevan is settled by SMS to an Armenian number (parking guide). Petrol was 600 AMD a litre in September 2026 and diesel 680, the reverse of most of Europe; LPG was 250 (fuel prices). If you land after dark, keep the first drive to the hotel (driving at night). Coming after 15 November? Winter tyres with more than 4 mm of tread are compulsory from 15 November to 31 March, a calendar rule, not Germany’s situational one (winter guide). Longer plans: self-drive itineraries, or the complete rental guide.

Questions Germans ask before booking
Is there a direct flight from Germany to Armenia?
Yes, from Frankfurt (Lufthansa daily, Condor in summer), Hamburg, Memmingen and Dortmund (Wizz Air) and Cologne/Bonn (Eurowings, Tuesdays), as of October 2026. Munich has none. Check the timetable before booking, because winter schedules change.
Can I enter Armenia with a German ID card?
No. The Auswärtiges Amt says entry must be on a valid passport and an ID card is not sufficient. Visa-free stays run up to 180 days a year.
Do I need an international driving permit with a German licence?
Not legally. The German card licence is recognised and meets Armenia’s Latin-letters-and-photo test. The AA recommends a permit as a precaution, and it is valid only alongside the national licence.
Is it safe to drive in Armenia with the Teilreisewarnung in force?
The warning names specific roads and areas, mostly along the Azerbaijani border. The standard tourist loops avoid them, except that the M2 at Yeraskh is transit-only on the way south. Traffic is the everyday risk. Read the AA page and decide with it in hand.
Can I collect the car at 3 a.m.?
Pickup at Zvartnots is free. The terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email us with your flight number to check whether it applies. A hotel handover in the morning avoids the question.
Can I take the car to Georgia?
Yes, with the written permit, arranged at least 48 hours before pickup. Email us to arrange it and get the cost. Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran are outside any rental. See the Georgia guide.
