Travel to Armenia from the United Kingdom: Luton and the IDP

14 October 2026

Winding paved road through red hills with a few vehicles and Mount Ararat on the horizon

One airline flies nonstop from the United Kingdom to Yerevan: Wizz Air UK, from London Luton on Mondays and Fridays since 8 June 2026, in just over five hours. If you want to travel to Armenia from the United Kingdom and hire a car there, three things matter more than the flight: the FCDO tells you to carry a 1968 International Driving Permit, you will be driving on the right, and your phone plan will not follow you.

The permit: what the FCDO says and what the rules say

The FCDO’s Armenia safety page says you need both a 1968 International Driving Permit and your UK driving licence. It adds: “You cannot buy an IDP (international driving permit) outside the UK, so get one before you travel.” The rules Armenia publishes are softer. The foreign ministry lets drivers from 1968 Vienna Convention countries use their national licence, and the UK is one. A photocard has Latin letters, categories and a photo, which is the Armenian government’s test. Sixt Armenia’s own terms list the UK among licences accepted without a permit.

At our counter a national licence in Latin script is accepted for stays up to one year, if you have held it for two years. So you can rent without a permit. But the FCDO tells you to carry one, an officer at a roadside check or a rental desk may ask, and gov.uk says permits are sold in person at PayPoint shops for £5.50. Ask for the 1968 type. The international driving permit guide has the full picture.

At home you drive on the left; Armenia drives on the right, and the first hour is where it shows. Roundabouts are the test. Approach every Yerevan roundabout expecting the other driver to claim priority, and remember that traffic now circulates anticlockwise. At junctions your reflexes are reversed: the traffic you check first when pulling out comes from your left, and a left turn means crossing oncoming cars. Cars in right-hand-traffic countries are normally left-hand drive, so expect to sit on the left; ask if you want to confirm it for your car. If you are unsure, consider an automatic. We cannot promise one on your dates, so read automatic or manual in Armenia and ask when you book. Do your first drive in daylight, on a wide road.

How to travel to Armenia from the United Kingdom: Luton and the one-stops

As of October 2026 this is the picture; check the airline’s timetable before you book — winter schedules change.

The Luton flight is an A321neo with 239 seats. ARKA reported the first flight on 8 June 2026; earlier announcements had said 12 June. Time Out called it the first direct UK flights. Timetable sites list it with no end date, so it looks year-round, but Wizz has not confirmed that. The flight home leaves Yerevan at 23:10. No other UK airport has a nonstop that we could find.

With two flights a week most British readers will connect. Nearly every one-stop lands between 01:00 and 05:00; only Luton lands before midnight in summer.

Why Armenia from here

It is just over five hours from Luton. The distances are small: Garni is 31 km from Yerevan, Sevanavank 68 km. And a sedan covers more than 90 per cent of the tourist map, on roads that are 96.7 per cent asphalted. Armenia allows 180 days in a year without a visa.

Entry and phone

The FCDO says your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. The Armenian foreign ministry lists the UK among visa-free nationalities, up to 180 days in a year. The UK has no ID card, so the passport is the only document. Roaming is the other surprise. Do not assume it is included: neither the UK nor Armenia is in the EU’s roam-like-at-home zone, so check your network’s rest-of-world tariff or buy a local SIM. Viva-MTS has the widest coverage and costs about 2,500 AMD (about €6) for 4 GB over 30 days; bring your passport. Costs here are in AMD with euros in brackets; check the pound rate on the day.

What the FCDO says, and what it means on the road

The FCDO advice was last updated on 1 March 2026 and still current on 14 October. It “advises against all travel to within 5km of the entire eastern border between Armenia and Azerbaijan” and “against all travel along the M16/H26 road between the towns of Ijevan and Noyemberyan”. It says consular support is severely limited within the strip, and that “Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice”. On driving: “The standard of driving is poor.” It says roads are in a poor state, particularly from November to February, and “If possible avoid driving outside of cities and towns in the dark.”

The Ijevan to Noyemberyan road is not on any tourist loop; the normal ways to the Georgian border are the M4 via Dilijan and Ijevan and the M6 via Vanadzor and Alaverdi. The FCDO names nothing else, but Germany’s foreign office is more road-specific, with partial warnings for the M2 between Yeraskh and Karki, areas north of Jermuk, everything east of Goris and the M17 south of Kapan. So: Sevan, Dilijan, Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Noravank, the Debed canyon and Gyumri are fine. The M2 at Yeraskh is transit-only, so do not stop. Treat the far south-east with care. The day-to-day danger is traffic, not conflict; see driving in Armenia and driving at night.

Landing at 22:35, leaving at 23:10

Pickup at Zvartnots is free on every evncar booking. Add your flight number: we track it, the handover moves with a delay and there is no waiting fee. Handover takes about ten minutes. The rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time.

Our advice if you have never driven on the right: do not take the car at midnight. Sleep, and collect at breakfast; the booking form offers central Yerevan and a hotel as handover points. A chauffeur transfer has no night surcharge and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. The return is the mirror image: the Luton flight leaves at 23:10, so you get a full last day and an evening drop-off, which is after 21:00. Delivery to and collection from Zvartnots is included, but write to us to check whether the out-of-hours fee applies to a late return. Nothing is charged online, confirmation comes by email within an hour, and cancellation is free until handover.

Bring passport, licence, permit and booking confirmation. British renters often expect a credit-card deposit. Ours is shown on each car page, taken by credit card or in cash at handover and released within five working days of return if the car comes back as it left, without unpaid fines. See deposits and excess, insurance and the rental terms. The documents guide and the Zvartnots arrivals guide cover the rest.

Easing in: Tuesday and Wednesday

Monday night. Transfer, hotel, sleep. Tuesday. Collect at 09:00 and take the M4 to Sevan, the gentlest first drive: Sevanavank is 68 km, 60 to 75 minutes, and Dilijan 39 km beyond. Come back the same day or stay over; Yerevan to Sevan and Dilijan has the timings. Wednesday. Garni is 31 km and Geghard 10 km further, a short loop once your right-hand habits have settled; see Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones. Longer trips are in the self-drive itineraries, and the pillar guide is renting a car in Armenia.

From 15 November to 31 March winter tyres are compulsory in Armenia, so read winter driving in Armenia before a Luton flight in the cold months.

Questions British travellers ask

Is there a direct flight from the UK to Armenia?

Yes, from London Luton only: Wizz Air UK on Mondays and Fridays since 8 June 2026. We found no nonstop from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or other UK airports.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Armenia?

Not at our counter, where a Latin-script national licence is accepted for stays up to one year. But the FCDO says you need a 1968 IDP and your UK licence, and you cannot buy one outside the UK.

Where do I get a 1968 IDP and what does it cost?

gov.uk says permits are sold in person at PayPoint shops for £5.50. Ask for the 1968 type before you travel.

Which side of the road do they drive on in Armenia?

The right. Start in daylight on a wide road, expect other drivers to claim roundabout priority, and consider an automatic if you are unsure.

Does the FCDO say Armenia is safe to drive in?

It advises against travel within 5 km of the Azerbaijan border and on the M16/H26 from Ijevan to Noyemberyan, and says the standard of driving is poor. Standard tourist loops avoid both areas.

Will my UK mobile work in Armenia?

Do not assume it will at home rates. Neither the UK nor Armenia is in the EU’s roam-like-at-home zone, so check your network’s rest-of-world tariff or buy a local SIM or eSIM.

Landing at Zvartnots on Monday or Friday?

Free airport pickup, nothing charged online, free cancellation until handover. Add your flight number and we track it. Questions about pricing, extras or your arrival time? Write to info@evncar.com.
