Travel to Armenia from Poland: A Dawn Landing, Then Your Car
15 October 2026

The simplest way to travel to Armenia from Poland is the LOT nonstop from Warsaw Chopin to Yerevan, about 3 hours 40 minutes in the air. It lands between roughly 03:15 and 05:35, so plan the first night around sleep and pick up your rental car at breakfast time instead of straight off the plane.

Three reasons Armenia suits a Polish traveller
The stay limit. You are used to Schengen’s 90 days in 180. Armenia lets Polish citizens stay up to 180 days in one year, which suits a long road trip.
A short flight and familiar traffic. Warsaw to Yerevan takes about 3 hours 40 minutes, and Armenia drives on the right, as Poland does. There is no side-of-the-road adjustment to make at dawn.
You may already know the stones. Published lists count about 20 khachkars, the carved stone crosses, in Polish towns from Gdańsk to Zamość, and Gyumri has been twinned with Białystok since 2013. The originals stand by the thousand at Noratus, a free cemetery about 10 km south of Sevan town that is always open.
How to travel to Armenia from Poland: flights
| Airport | Airline | Frequency | Block time | Usual landing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warsaw Chopin (WAW) | LOT | 6 to 7 a week | About 3h35 out, 3h55 to 4h05 back | Summer: about 03:15 (Mon, Wed, Sat) or 04:25 (Tue, Thu, Fri, Sun). Winter: about 04:00 or 05:35 |
That is the only direct route from Poland, as of October 2026. Check the airline’s timetable before you book, because winter schedules change. Summer times come from flight-tracker history; the winter ones are our own arithmetic from published departures at 21:25 and 23:00. Flights home leave Yerevan between roughly 04:20 and 06:40, so you will be at Zvartnots in the dark both ways. Armenia is on UTC+4 all year: two hours ahead of Warsaw in summer, three from the clock change on 25 October 2026.
Why only one airline? Wizz Air announced Katowice to Yerevan for April 2023, and Poland’s aviation authority refused the permit. The business daily Forsal reported that the air agreement allows one carrier per side, and LOT holds it. We found no sign that has changed.
From other cities the default is a connection through Warsaw on LOT. Turkish Airlines resumed Istanbul to Yerevan in March 2026 and has run 14 flights a week since 15 June, according to Zvartnots airport. Austrian via Vienna and Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich are the other names aggregators give. A Georgia leg is possible too, as our guide to taking a rental car from Armenia to Georgia explains.
Passport and licence
The Armenian foreign ministry’s visa-free list includes Poland: up to 180 days in one year, on a valid passport. We found no official confirmation that a national ID card is accepted, so do not count on the dowód osobisty; Polish sites such as r.pl say it will not do. Six months’ validity is common airline advice, not an Armenian rule. Polish pages suggest registering in Odyseusz; that is not an entry condition.
Poland and Armenia are both parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention, and Armenia’s foreign ministry says drivers from those countries can use their national licence. Armenia’s government test asks for Latin letters, categories in Latin letters and a photo. A plastic Polish card passes. evncar accepts a Latin-script national licence for stays up to one year, held at least two years, with a minimum age of 21 to 25 depending on the car. Under 25 a daily young-driver surcharge applies; email info@evncar.com for the details. An old paper booklet is a different document that we have not checked, so ask before you fly. An IDP is optional insurance; whether Armenia recognises a 1949-format one is unverified. See the guides to the international driving permit and documents, and the under-25 rules.
What the Polish foreign ministry says, and what it means on the road
The ministry’s Armenia advice now lives in Odyseusz, an app and portal. We could not read the current text, so we will not paraphrase it. Open odyseusz.gov.pl/AM, note the level and the date, and read it before you book. A 2022 embassy notice that circulates on travel blogs told citizens to avoid Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Syunik after the September 2022 border fighting. We found no sign it is current.
For comparison, Germany’s foreign office has a partial travel warning (15 October 2026, unchanged since 12 June) for zones along the Azerbaijan border, including the M11 east of Vardenis, the M16 north of Ijevan, the M2 between Yeraskh and Karki, the area north of Jermuk and everything east of Goris. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel within 5 km of the eastern border and on the M16/H26 between Ijevan and Noyemberyan.
The standard loops do not touch those strips: Sevan and Dilijan, Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, the Debed canyon, Gyumri. The one close pass is the M2 at Yeraskh on the way south. Drive through, do not stop, do not photograph. South and east of Goris and north of Jermuk need care. The everyday risk is traffic, not conflict: the FCDO calls the standard of driving poor and advises against driving outside towns in the dark, which is why a dawn handover needs a plan. See the driving guide and the post on driving at night.
Collecting the car after a 04:00 landing
Pickup at the Zvartnots arrivals hall is free on every booking. Add your flight number and evncar tracks it, so a delay moves the handover with no waiting fee. The handover takes about ten minutes.
Pickup at Zvartnots is free. The rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time. The same question applies to a handover before your flight home.
Your options: take the car at the airport if you are rested enough to drive at dawn; ask for a handover at a hotel in Yerevan or in the city centre once you have slept; or book the chauffeur transfer, which has no night surcharge and 60 minutes’ free waiting after landing.
Bring your passport, licence, booking and something for the deposit. It is shown on each car page and taken at handover by credit card or in cash, then released within five working days of return if the car comes back as it left with no unpaid fines. The deposits guide has the market picture. Every rate includes third-party insurance, a collision damage waiver capped at the deposit, unlimited mileage, a second driver and roadside assistance; the insurance guide explains the limits. Nothing is charged online, and cancellation is free until handover. Rates are on the fleet page, the meeting point on the airport pickup page, and the full routine in the Zvartnots guide.
A first 48 hours built around a dawn arrival
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 03:15 to 05:35 | Land, clear passport control and bags, go to the hotel, sleep. Ask about early check-in, or book the night before. |
| Late morning | Handover at the hotel or in the centre. Film a slow walk-around of the car and check the spare and first-aid kit. |
| Afternoon, day 1 | A short first drive: Garni is 31 km (40 to 50 minutes), Geghard 10 km further. Garni costs 1,500 AMD (about €3.50), Geghard is free. See Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones. Be back before dark. |
| Day 2 | Leave early for Khor Virap (43 km, 45 to 55 minutes), because Ararat hazes out by midday in summer, then Areni and Noravank: 4 to 5 hours of driving. See Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank. |
After that, the self-drive itineraries run to 3, 5, 7 and 10 days. From 15 November, winter tyres with more than 4 mm of tread are compulsory until 31 March, a rule Poland does not have; read the winter driving guide and check the Rescue Service bulletin before mountain days. The complete rental guide covers the rest, and the contact page reaches us.

Last verified 15 October 2026. LOT times come from flight-tracker histories for September and October 2026 and a winter sample week; winter landings are our own calculation. Visa-free rules are from the Armenian foreign ministry. The Polish ministry’s advice (Odyseusz) could not be read; the German and British lines are from their own advice pages.
