Travel to Armenia from Sweden: One Stop and a Night Landing
14 October 2026

As of October 2026 no Swedish airport has a nonstop to Armenia, so to travel to Armenia from Sweden you take one stop, and every option we found lands in Yerevan between about 01:00 and 05:00. Swedes enter visa-free for up to 180 days a year. Sweden’s own embassy in Yerevan publishes specific road advice, including a line about daylight that should shape your first night.

How to travel to Armenia from Sweden without a nonstop
We found no direct flight from Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg or any other Swedish airport, and none to Gyumri. Nothing suggests a nonstop from Malmö, Bromma or Skavsta either. Nonstops from Hamburg, Dortmund, Amsterdam or London Luton exist, but flying south first rarely beats one stop. The table is a timetable sample for the week of 26 October to 1 November 2026, taken from an aggregator dated 6 August, so confirm every flight on the airline’s own site before you book: winter schedules change.
| From Arlanda via | Airline | Frequency in the sample week | Quoted time | Usual landing in Yerevan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warsaw | LOT | Thursday and Sunday, leaves 19:30 | About 5 h 55, quickest on paper | About 04:25 to 04:45 |
| Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | Daily at 11:30; also 14:20 (Sat, Sun) and 18:15 (Wed, Thu, Sat) | 8 h 05 to 11 h 05 | About 01:00 on the 11:30 departure |
| Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen | Pegasus | Daily at 15:05 | 8 h 10 to 10 h 25 | Not seen |
| Vienna | Austrian | New from 25 October 2026; no times seen | About 10 h 25 | Its Vienna flight lands about 03:50 to 05:10 |
| Riga | airBaltic | No flights in the sample week | About 6 h 20 | Not seen |
The quoted time appears to be flight time only, so the Turkish 11:30 departure works out at about 10 h 30 door to door. From Gothenburg, Turkish via Istanbul had the most flights, Austrian via Vienna was listed three times a week, and LOT via Warsaw about 6 h 20.
What Sweden’s embassy says, line by line
Sweden’s foreign ministry (UD) publishes its Armenia advice through the embassy’s pages, which say they are updated continuously. We read them on 15 October 2026. The key lines, in Swedish and English:
- The border strip. UD “avråder från alla resor till områden som ligger närmare än fem kilometer” from the Armenia-Azerbaijan border: it advises against all travel within five kilometres. The security page was last updated on 18 September 2026.
- One named road. “Vägen mellan Ijevan och Noyemberyan bör undvikas”: avoid the road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, which runs close to the border in places.
- Traffic. “I Jerevan är trafiken tät och stökig”: traffic in Yerevan is dense and chaotic. “Vägarna utanför huvudstaden är inte sällan i dåligt skick”: roads outside the capital are often in poor condition. The traffic-safety page adds “Resor utanför Jerevan bör planeras så att de kan företas i dagsljus”: plan trips outside Yerevan so they can be made in daylight.
- Registration. The embassy asks Swedes in Armenia to register on Svensklistan and install the UD Resklar app, which sends push notifications for Armenia. The embassy is in the Yerevan Plaza Business Centre, 9 Grigor Lusavorich Street.
UD’s list of countries it advises against carries an Armenia entry, which in context reads as the five-kilometre strip rather than the whole country. UD’s general explanation is that travel insurance normally does not apply where it advises against travel, so treat the strip as a place not to go at all. The embassy text we read does not mention Nakhchivan or landmines. Germany’s foreign office (Auswärtiges Amt, 15 October 2026) adds restricted military zones and landmine risk, and names the M11 east of Vardenis, the M16 north of Ijevan, the M2 between Yeraskh and Karki, the area north of Jermuk and everything east of Goris.
What this means on the road: the standard loops do not touch those strips. That covers Sevan and Dilijan, Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, the Debed canyon, Gyumri and Aragats. The M2 at Yeraskh is transit-only, so drive through and do not stop. Syunik south and east of Goris, and the roads north of Jermuk, need care. For Georgia, use the M4 via Dilijan and Ijevan or the M6 via Vanadzor and Alaverdi, never the Noyemberyan road. Traffic, not conflict, is the main day-to-day risk, and driving at night in Armenia explains the daylight line. Check the Rescue Service bulletin for closures.
Passport and entry
The embassy’s visa page, last updated on 6 March 2025, says Swedes have not needed a visa since January 2013, except for stays beyond 180 days a year. Armenia’s foreign ministry list agrees. The embassy’s entry page asks for a valid Swedish passport that covers your stay and need not extend beyond your departure date. It also warns that entry and exit rules can change at short notice. It does not mention the national ID card, so bring the passport.
Your Swedish licence
Sweden is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, and the Swedish card has Latin letters, categories and a photo, which is the test Armenia applies. Our rule is that a national licence in Latin script is accepted for stays up to one year. You do not need an IDP, and Sixt Armenia lists Sweden among countries accepted without one, though an individual desk may still ask. The embassy pages say nothing on licences. See our IDP guide and documents needed to rent a car in Armenia.
Armenia does not require daytime running lights. Use dipped beam at night and in poor visibility. If you travel from 15 November to 31 March, you will recognise the idea of winter tyres: they are compulsory, with tread above 4 mm (winter driving in Armenia).
Collecting the car after a night landing
With evncar, pickup at the Zvartnots arrivals hall is free on every booking. Add your flight number: we track the flight, the handover moves with a delay, and there is no waiting fee. Handover takes about ten minutes. Yerevan city centre and a hotel in Yerevan are also handover points. Every flight in the table lands between 01:00 and 05:00, so read this carefully.
Pickup at Zvartnots is free. The rental terms list a separate out-of-hours fee for handovers before 08:00 or after 21:00, so email info@evncar.com with your flight number and we will confirm whether it applies to your arrival time. A chauffeur airport transfer has no night surcharge and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, which suits a 04:30 arrival.
Bring your passport, licence, booking confirmation and a card or cash for the deposit. The deposit is shown on each car page, taken at handover by credit card or cash, and released within five working days of return if the car comes back as it left with no unpaid fines (deposits and excess). We quote euros because kronor float; at about 425 AMD to the euro, 20,000 AMD is about €47, a sensible amount of cash for regional trips because small rural stations are often cash-only. Swedish roaming covers the EU and EEA, not Armenia, so buy a local SIM or eSIM. Viva-MTS has the widest coverage and a passport is required. See the airport pickup page, the Zvartnots guide and car rental insurance.
Your first 48 hours after a landing at 04:30
04:30 to 09:00. Take the transfer to your hotel, about 12 km away, and sleep. This follows the embassy’s daylight advice: you meet Yerevan traffic first in the morning.
Day one, from about 09:00. Take the car from the city centre or your hotel, and keep the first drive short. Garni is 31 km out, 40 to 50 minutes, with Geghard 10 km beyond; Garni costs 1,500 AMD (about €3.50) and Geghard is free. Be back before dark. See Garni, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones, and parking in Yerevan for city streets.
Day two. Lake Sevan is 68 km from Yerevan and Dilijan a further 39 km (the day trip). Leave after breakfast and plan the return in light. For more days, use the self-drive itineraries, or the renting guide to choose a class. The wider rules are in driving in Armenia.
